Planning Your Trip

FLIGHTS TO ITALY

Book flights to Italy direct with the airline and book your Italian villa rental with Bridgewater’s Idyllic Italy. There are many operators flying to Italy from the UK and Internationally.

Some flights only operate during the summer months. We always advise you to book early in order to obtain the cheapest rates, though some companies, like Ryanair, only let you book a limited time ahead.

School holidays and and other festivities are usually more expensive. We recommend having a look at www.skyscanner.net to search for low- cost flights from your local airport to all Italian airports.

DRIVING TO ITALY AND MOTORAIL

(The most luxurious motorail train in Europe) Sunday Times 2007

More and more people are choosing to drive to Italy or to put their car on the train. Taking your own car adds greater flexibility to your holiday. You can avoid stressful airport queues and luggage restrictions as well as enjoy a leisurely drive at a pace that suits your, through some of Europe’s most stunning scenery with an overnight stop en-route.

The drive from Calais to Zeebruge to Tuscany or Umbria takes approximately a day and a half. Northern Tuscany is closer to Calais than is the French Riviera.

Below we have listed a couple of tried and tested driving routes (many times over with our now grown up children in the car).

SUGGESTED DRIVING ROUTES:

ROUTE A:

Calais / Arras/ Reims / Metz / Strasbourg or Zebrugge / Brussels / Luxembourg / Strasbourg – both routes then continue:

Strasbourg / Basle / Lucerne / St.Gothard Tunnel / Como / Milan / La Spezia (for coast) or Parma / Bologna (For inland Tuscany)

Aprox distance Florence 850 miles

Aprox driving distance to Pietrasanta 804 miles

ROUTE B:

Calais / Arras / Reims / Chalons sur Marne / Lyon / Dijon / Besancon / Lausanne / Martigny / leave

Grand St. BernardAostal / Ivreal / Allesandria / Piacenza / Parma / La Spezia (For coast) or Bologna / Firenze (for inland Tuscany)

Aprox distance 900 miles to Florence

Aprox driving distance to Pietrasanta 850 miles

RECOMMENDED OVERNIGHT STOPS:

Montreaux – Lake Geneva. We stayed in The Royal Plaza. ‘The Hotel with the million dollar view’ only 480 miles from Calais. The hotel offers outstanding standards in a magical location by the lake, overlooking the magnificent mountain peaks of the Alps. Indoor pool.
