AN EVENING TO REMEMBER: The Eagles in concert, Lucca, Tuscany

We arrived in Lucca early evening and headed straight to the Anfiteatro for ‘apertivo’.  We sat soaking up the lazy summer atmosphere whilst cooling off with an Aperol Spritz and a plate of ‘Affettati Misti’ – local cold cuts of meats and cheeses.  It felt as if the evening couldn’t get any better but the best was yet to come…
Feeling a little hazy from the sun and the Spritz’s we headed through the narrow cobbled streets of Lucca full of excitement at the thought of what lay ahead of us.
As the sun began to set on a perfect summer evening in Lucca the opening chords of ‘How Long’ rang out across the Piazza Napoleone as The Eagles took to the stage at the annual Lucca Summer Festival and the reaction from the crowd made it very clear that the Los Angeles band were very welcome guests to this beautiful City.
Age has not diminished any of the magic of the band or their hit songs, and their wide appeal was evident from the crowd, who varied in all ages.
We danced the night away to all the classics; Take it to the Limit, Tequila Sunrise, Take it Easy, Life in the Fast Lane…  It was clear that everyone in the crowd had their own favourite track as each song was met with uproarious cheers and thundering applause.
Joe Walsh got the crowd going when he asked us if we were ‘ready for some rock and roll?’  The answer was a resounding yes and the dancing really began!
The bars around the Piazza stayed open for welcome refreshments (Prosecco for us!) as our throats were parched from singing along – especially to ‘Hotel California’ which was a real moment as thousands of people sang along with Don Henley.
There was a rare moment of silence when Timothy B Schmit commanded the stage with the beautifully haunting ‘I can’t tell you why’ but the silence was short lived as the rest of the band joined him for ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ and then a raucous rendition of ‘Heartache Tonight’.
As the evening drew to a close the stage fell dark and a single spotlight fell on to Don Henley who began with the iconic ‘Desperado..’.  Lighters were raised and voices were loud as the band finished with their classic hit.
As the Piazza emptied, the chattering crowd looked tired from dancing but each and every one of them had a smile upon their face.  It truly was a magical evening which will sit in my memories for life
