Forte dei Marmi is renowned world wide as one of Tuscany's most exclusive and elegant beach resorts, favoured over the centuries by royalty, noblemen, diplomats, business-men and artists who built their villas in the shade of Forte's vast pine woods. Today, the area remains a favourite with wealth Tuscans and Milanese and some of the worlds most celebrated stars. The town is located around a jetty set up during the sixteenth century to ship the apuan marbles. Since 1788 this has been sheltered through an outpost, which had been built by Leopoldo I and is still visible in the middle of the main square 'Piazza Garibaldi'.
The Versilian coastline on which Forte dei Marmi lies, offers visitors the chance to indulge in their favourite sports such as; mountaineering, sailing, wind surfing / surfing, golf, tennis, walking, cycling, horse-ring.
The most convenient airports for this stretch of Tuscan coast are Pisa (30 mins drive) and Florence (1 hour drive). However, the area is also accessible from Genoa, Bologna and Rome.
From Forte dei Marmi it is possible to take boats daily trips to the Cinque Terre, Portofino, Elba Island, Capraia Island; sightseeing tour of Florence, Siena and San Gimignano, Lucca, The Marble Caves of Carrara, Chianti; mountain bike excursions in the nel Migliarino National Park; visit the Villa Puccini and a boat tour of the Massaciuccoli lake.
